Can I get a Walmart MoneyCard if I have bad credit?

Yes. There are no credit checks required to get a Walmart MoneyCard. However, to help the government fight the funding of terrorism and money laundering activities, Federal law requires all financial institutions to obtain, verify, and record information that identifies each person who opens a Card Account. What this means for you: When you open a Card Account, we will ask for your name, address, date of birth, Social Security number, and other information that will allow us to identify you. We may also ask to see your driver's license or other identifying documents. Card Account opening is also subject to other fraud prevention measures.

Why do I have to provide my Social Security number and date of birth to get a personalized card?

To help the government fight the funding of terrorism and money laundering activities, Federal law requires all financial institutions to obtain, verify, and record information that identifies each person who opens a Card Account. What this means for you: When you open a Card Account, we will ask for your name, address, date of birth, Social Security number, and other information that will allow us to identify you. We may also ask to see your driver's license or other identifying documents. Card Account opening is also subject to other fraud prevention measures.

Using the Card

How do I check my card balance or transaction history?

There are many convenient ways to get your most updated balance and transactions:

  • If you have an online user ID, you may check your balance or transaction history online 24/7 on this website.
  • Balance and transaction history are available on the Walmart MoneyCard mobile app. Download the app for free from the App Store® or Google Play™ to get started.
  • If you don’t have an online user ID, click here to set one up.
  • You may also get your balance and transaction history by sending a text message. Carrier message and data rates apply.

Are there limits on how much money I can put on my card?

Yes. The maximum daily cash reload limit is $2,999, but maximum in-store reload limits also apply and you may not load cash to your card at any time the funds balance on your card exceeds $2,999. See your Cardholder Agreement for more information.

How did my transaction go through even though I didn’t have enough money on the card?

In certain instances, because of the way transactions are processed, your transaction could have gone through even though you did not have enough money on your card. As a result, your balance would be negative. Your next reload will be first used to cover the negative balance, and any remaining funds will be available for use. Please refer to your Cardholder Agreement for more information.

What if someone steals my card or uses it without my permission?

If you lose your card or believe it to be stolen, click here to report it lost/stolen. We will cancel your current card, transfer the remaining balance to a new card, and then mail it out to you at the address on file. A lost/stolen card replacement fee may apply.

To dispute a posted charge, click here for more information. Note that you cannot dispute a transaction until it is posted.

If you let someone use your card or card number, you are responsible for those transactions.

What happens when I return merchandise?

Merchants are responsible for crediting your card. Store return policies may vary. If a merchant cancels a transaction before it is posted, it may take up to 10 days for the authorization hold to be removed from your card. During this time, you will not have access to these funds.

If you receive a credit on your card and you did not make the original purchase using your card, your card will be suspended from use, and we will request additional documentation to reinstate the card.

What do I do with the card after I've spent the money?

Your card is a reloadable prepaid card, and you can continue to add money to it and use it. Reload your card and use it anywhere Debit MasterCard® or Visa® debit cards are accepted in the U.S.

There are many easy ways to add money to your card. Reload fees apply. Visit the Add Money page to learn more.

Can I buy and register more than one card in my name?

Yes, but we reserve the right to limit the number of cards issued to a single cardholder.

I bought something for X amount of dollars, but I was only charged $1. Why?

Many merchants will make sure that your card is valid by holding a $1.00 until they ship the merchandise. Then, they'll charge the full amount.

I bought something online and the transaction was declined even though I had enough money. Why?

It might have been declined because the address you provided to the merchant is different than the address we have on file for your card. If you need to update your address, click here.

I bought something for X dollars, but more than X dollars is being held on my card. Why?

There are certain types of merchants that sell goods or services where the final amount they will charge to your card is unknown at the time they first authorize your card. Typical merchants in this category include rental car companies, hotels, and internet service providers, where the final purchase amount is not known up front. Therefore, your card may be authorized or have money held for more than the actual amount of the purchase until the final transaction is complete, meaning those "authorized dollars" are not available for you to spend elsewhere. The timeframe the money is held depends on the transaction type.

Can I get a second card to give to a friend or family member?

Yes. In addition to your personalized card, you have the option of requesting a second card. The second cardholder must be at least 18 years old and pass the identity verification process. The second card will be personalized with the second cardholder’s name on it. Both your card and the second card will have the same account number and access to the same available funds loaded onto the card. A second card fee of $3 may apply. There is no additional monthly charge for the second card. You can request a second card by clicking here.

How can I get a second cardholder removed from my account?

To remove the second cardholder on file, the primary cardholder must cut the 2nd card in half and mail it to:

Walmart MoneyCard Lost/Stolen Department
P.O. Box 5100
Pasadena, CA 91117-0100

If you are the primary cardholder but are unable to mail the 2nd cardholder’s card back, call the number on the back of your card and request that the 2nd cardholder be removed from the account. Only the primary cardholder will be able to change information on an account.

How to Dispute a Transaction

What do I do if I have a question or think there is an error on my card?

It’s important to note that merchant names or locations for your transactions may not look familiar. Many merchants use their corporate or headquarters information instead of the particular store where you made the purchase. There may also be a delay in the posted date of the transaction. These are normal business practices. If the amount and date of the purchase are accurate, you may use that as your validation of the charge.

In case of errors or questions about your card, write to us at Walmart MoneyCard Customer Care, P.O. Box 5100, Pasadena, CA 91117-0100 or call us at (877) 937-4098. Contact us as soon as you can if you think an error has occurred in your card account. If writing us, a Transaction Dispute Form is available for your convenience at www.WalmartMoneyCard.com. We must allow you to report an error until 60 days after the earlier of: (i) the date you electronically accessed your account, provided the error could be viewed in the electronic history; or (ii) the date we sent the FIRST written history on which the error appeared. You may request a written history of your transactions at any time by writing us at Written History Request, P.O. Box 5100, Pasadena, CA 91117-0100 or by calling (877) 937-4098. When notifying us, you will need to tell us: (i) your name and card number; (ii) why you believe there is an error, and the dollar amount involved; and (iii) approximately when the error took place. If you tell us orally, we may require that you send us your complaint or question in writing within 10 business days.

We will determine whether an error occurred within 10 business days after we hear from you and will correct any error promptly. If we need more time, we may take up to 45 days to investigate. If we need more time, we credit your card within 10 business days for the amount you think is in error, so that you will have the money during the time it takes us to complete our investigation. If we ask you to put your complaint or question in writing and we do not receive it within 10 business days, we may not provisionally credit the card. We also may not credit the card if the error does not represent a qualifying dispute, as identified in the Disputes with Merchants section of the Cardholder Agreement. Click here for more details. We will let you know the results of our investigation within three business days of completing it. If we decide that there was no error, we will send you a written explanation.

You agree that any unauthorized use does not include use by a person to whom you have given authority to use the card or PIN and that you will be liable for all such uses by such person. For example, if you have given your card or card information to another person to use, such as a friend or relative, you are responsible for that person’s transactions with your card, and if you have given your card information to a merchant for a transaction, you have given authority to that merchant to debit the card for that transaction.

How to Reload

How can I reload or add money to my card?

You can add more money to your card with cash or by a cashing a check at any participating Walmart store, by enrolling in direct deposit, through an online bank transfer, or by depositing a check using your smartphone camera with the Walmart MoneyCard mobile app. Photo check deposit is available only to Walmart MoneyCard cardholders with the Cash-Back Rewards product. Reload, check cashing fees and limits apply. Not available in all states or stores. To learn more about all the ways to add money to your card, visit the Add Money page.

Direct Deposit

How do I begin using direct deposit?

The process is easy! Follow these simple steps:
  1. Ask your payroll or benefits office if they offer direct deposit. If they do, just give them your direct deposit and bank routing number to enroll.
  2. To get this information, click here to log in to your account and we will create a personalized direct deposit form that you can print out. Or, just write down your direct deposit and bank routing number and take it to your payroll or benefits office.
Once you've submitted your form, you will normally start receiving your pay on your card within 1 to 2 pay periods.

TIP: Ask your payor how long it will take for them to set up your direct deposit. If it takes longer than expected to receive your first direct deposit to your card, check back with your payroll or benefits office. Green Dot does not have your enrollment status information.

Do I have to direct deposit my entire paycheck or benefits check? How much of my pay can I elect for direct deposit?

With the exception of certain federal government benefit payments, you can elect to have as much or as little of your paycheck or benefits payment deposited to your Walmart MoneyCard as you like. The choice is completely yours, and you can cancel or change the amount of your direct deposit at any time.

If you enroll in direct deposit for federal government benefits (such as Social Security, Supplemental Security Income, Veterans Benefits, or Federal Civil Service), the entire amount of your benefit payment must be deposited to your Walmart MoneyCard. You can cancel the direct deposit of your federal government benefits at any time, but you cannot change the amount of your federal benefits direct deposit.

How can I be sure the direct deposit was made?

You can track your transactions using the Walmart MoneyCard mobile app. Download the app for free from the App Store or on Google Play to get started.

You can also sign up for mobile text alerts to automatically receive direct deposit and daily balance alerts. Carrier message and data rates apply.

My direct deposit was supposed to be deposited today, but I don't see it on my available balance. What happened?

The exact time of day that your paycheck is deposited onto your card might vary from payday to payday. If you haven’t received a direct deposit that you are expecting, it’s because we haven’t received the payment instructions from your employer or benefits provider.

If you are concerned about the status of your direct deposit, follow these steps:
  1. Contact your payor to verify that the direct deposit was sent. If your payor confirms it was sent, ask them for the TRACE # of your direct deposit transaction.
  2. Once you have the TRACE #, call the automated Walmart MoneyCard Support Line at 1-877-937-4098 and we will investigate the transaction. NOTE: If you have recently reported your card lost or stolen, please make sure to tell the Customer Support Specialist when you call.
  3. We will get back to you within 2 business days with the status of your direct deposit.
If you enrolled in direct deposit for federal benefits, you should contact the agency that administers your benefit.

How do I cancel my direct deposit?

To cancel your direct deposit, you must contact your employer or the payor of your benefits. They will tell you how to cancel the service. When cancelling direct deposit, please allow up to 2 pay periods for the request to be processed. Cancelling direct deposit will in no way impact the use of your Walmart MoneyCard.

Early Direct Deposit

This benefit is only available to Walmart MoneyCard cardholders with Cash-Back Rewards and Walmart MoneyCard Preferred cardholders.

What is Early Direct Deposit?
When you enroll in direct deposit, you could get paid up to 2 days early if your employer or benefits provider notifies us of your deposit before your official payday.

How does Early Direct Deposit work?
You must be enrolled in direct deposit with your employer or benefits provider. Many employers and benefits providers notify the bank of direct deposits before the “official” payday. If we receive sufficient early notice, we will deposit your pay on the card early.* Ask your employer when they submit their direct deposit information to the bank. It is important to note that often employers or benefit providers may not submit early every pay period depending on the day of the week, month and holidays. This means you will not always get your deposit as early every pay period.

*Payroll, government benefits, and child support are the only deposits that qualify for early access to your money.

Tax Refunds

ATTENTION CARDHOLDERS: As of May 31, 2016, we will not accept state or federal tax refund deposits to your Walmart MoneyCard for the remainder of 2016. We will begin to accept state and federal tax refund deposits again in 2017.

How can I get my tax refund direct deposited to my card?

When you fill out your tax return, enter your card's routing and direct deposit number in the space provided on your tax form. Log in to your account for this information. Note that for direct deposit and tax refund purposes, your card is designated as a checking account; check that box on your tax form.

How do I check the status of my tax refund?

We do not have the status of your tax refund. The IRS provides estimated dates for when federal refunds will be sent. If you have not yet received your refund and would like to check the status, visit the IRS web site at www.irs.gov and select "Where's My Refund" or call the IRS Refund Hotline at (800) 829-1954.

For information about your state refund, contact your state government agency.

Can I receive tax refunds for other people on my card?

No. The tax deposit must be in the name of the cardholder. In accordance with IRS guidelines, you cannot direct someone else’s refund to your card. If we receive a tax refund intended for individuals other than the cardholder, the refund will be rejected, your card may be blocked, and the money may be returned to the IRS. For more information about tax refunds, visit the IRS website.

Walmart Check Cashing

This service is provided by Walmart. For more information, go to the Walmart check cashing information page .

How to Make Purchases

A merchant keeps charging my card every week/month. Why?

These may be recurring transactions which are automatically charged to your card. Examples of merchants that may use recurring transactions include video rental services, internet service providers, health clubs, insurance companies, or cable TV services. Contact the service provider or merchant directly if you want to cancel these services.

Are there any merchants where I can’t use my card?

Walmart MoneyCard may not be used at certain types of merchants such as casinos and gambling web sites.

It is the policy of some merchants to not accept prepaid cards. Check with the merchant before attempting to make a purchase.

The Walmart MoneyCard is also not designed for business use and we may close your card if you use it for business purposes. We may block card usage in some countries due to fraud or security concerns.

What happens when I use my Walmart MoneyCard at a gas station?

Paying at the pump with the credit function may cause up to a 7-day hold because you swipe and authorize your card before pumping. To be charged the exact amount you pump, choose debit and use your PIN. You can also pay the attendant and be charged the exact amount you pump.

What happens when I use my Walmart MoneyCard at a restaurant?

Restaurants will verify if you have enough money on your card for the dining bill, plus an estimated tip. This amount may be held for up to 7 days or until the actual transaction is posted to your card. The funds are held and unavailable for other purchases.

Can I use my card to rent a car?

Your Walmart MoneyCard may be used to rent a car, but rental car companies "authorize" (have money held) for much more money than the actual cost of the rental car. The reason is that the rental car company won't know if they need to charge you for additional expenses like gas, car damage, or extra days until you return the vehicle. These authorized funds will be held and unavailable for you to spend until the final transaction is posted to your statement. This means that you might not have access to these funds for as long as 90 days. To avoid problems when you rent, our advice is to first call the rental car company and ask them what their policy is regarding the use of prepaid debit cards.

What happens when I use my Walmart MoneyCard to reserve or pay for a hotel bill?

Hotels put a hold on the amount of your estimated bill, making that amount unavailable for other purchases. When you check out, the hold will take up to 10 days to be removed.

What if I return merchandise?

Merchants are responsible for crediting your card. Store return policies may vary. If a merchant cancels a transaction before it is posted, it may take up to 10 days for the authorization hold to be removed from your card. During this time, you will not have access to these funds.

If you receive a credit on your card and you did not make the original purchase using your card, your card will be suspended from use, and we will request additional documentation to reinstate the card.

What are pending transactions?

Pending transactions are transactions in which your card may be authorized or have money held for more than the actual amount of the purchase until the final transaction is complete -- meaning that those authorized dollars are not available for you to spend elsewhere.

What are posted transactions?

Posted transactions are purchases, bill payments, and credits that have been processed by the merchant's bank. In most cases, it takes about a day or two for the transaction amount to be deducted or credited to your account after a transaction is made. When the transaction has finished processing, the status changes from "pending" to "posted" on your transaction history.

What are the limits to Send Money?

You can send up to $500 in one day and $1,000 in 30 days (across all Green Dot Bank cards).

The daily and monthly Send Money limits are the collective maximum amounts you can send from any cards you have that are issued by Green Dot Bank. For example, if you send $500 to a relative using your Walmart MoneyCard and on the same day you attempt to send a friend $200 using your Green Dot card, you will have exceeded your daily limit of $500. Since both cards are issued by Green Dot Bank, your $200 Send Money transaction on your Green Dot card will not be processed.

Not sure if you have more than one card issued by Green Dot Bank? Check the bottom of the back of your card and look for the words “Green Dot Bank.”

How can I cancel a Send Money transaction?

You can only cancel a Send Money transaction which is listed as “Unclaimed.” To cancel, go to the transaction in the Home Overview page, click “Cancel,” then confirm the cancellation. If the transaction has already been claimed, or has any other status such as Expired, Rejected or Cancelled, you cannot cancel it.

How can the recipient receive the money I sent?

There are three ways to receive the money:

  1. To a Walmart MoneyCard in good standing.
  2. To any other Green Dot Bank issued card in good standing.
  3. With a PayPal account. The money will be automatically sent to PayPal if the email or phone number used is already confirmed with PayPal. Otherwise, PayPal will send the recipient information on how to create a PayPal account or link the email or phone number to an existing PayPal account.

If your recipient does not have a Walmart MoneyCard or any other card issued by Green Dot Bank, they can sign up for one online and load the money you sent to a temporary card number. If you have a non-reloadable card, you cannot receive money using the Send Money feature.

What can I do if the recipient does not receive a notification?

You should first ask the recipient to check their spam or junk folder (if sending by email) or their cell reception (if sending by text message). If the recipient still does not receive the notification, you can cancel the original Send Money transaction and try again.

What can I do if I sent money to the wrong email address or cell phone number?

If you have sent money to the wrong email address or cell phone, you should cancel that transaction right away. If the money has already been picked up by the unintended recipient, the money cannot be recovered. To avoid this, always make sure to double check the recipient information before sending money.

Online Bill Pay Service

This service is not available to Walmart MoneyCard Basic cardholders.

Is there a fee for the Online Bill Pay Service?

We do not charge any bill payment transaction fees.

How do I get started with online bill payment?

Select Pay Bills & People then Bill Pay from the navigation menu

Click the "Sign Up Now" button on the right side of the page.

After you have accepted the legal agreements and verified your email address, you will be ready to pay bills using your card.

Who can I pay?

You can pay anyone in the U.S. Thousands of billers who accept electronic payments are supported, including many utility companies, cell phone providers, and others. To pay a biller that does not accept electronic payments, a paper check will be mailed.

Is there a minimum or maximum amount I can pay someone?

There is no minimum amount that can be paid, but there is a $1,500 maximum limit on each individual bill payment. Your bill payments will also count against the daily $2,999 spend limit on the card.

When will my payees receive their money?

Each time you submit a bill payment, you will be able to see both the debit date (the date the funds will be removed from your card balance) and the payment date (the earliest day that the biller may receive the bill payment).

If your payee is included in our list of thousands of billers who accept electronic payments, your payments may arrive as early as the next business day, as long as you submit your request for payment before 1:00 pm ET. If you submit your request for payment after 1:00 pm ET, your electronic payment will be received by the biller on the second business day after your scheduled payment.

You also have the ability to schedule any payment to arrive on any future business day, up to a year in advance. Our payment calendar allows you to view the date your money will leave your card, as well as the earliest date your money may be received by your payee.

What happens if there is not enough money to cover a payment?

Your payment will be declined. It is your responsibility to make sure there are sufficient funds on your card before 1:00 pm ET on the date the payment is scheduled for debit from your card.

If your payment is declined due to insufficient funds, then you will need to resubmit the payment request once you have loaded sufficient funds onto the card.

If you schedule a payment prior to 1:00 pm ET today with a debit date of today, we will attempt to process the payment immediately, or on the next business day if today is not a business day. If there are not enough funds to cover the payment, you will see a message that the payment was declined.

If you have scheduled a payment for a future date, we will attempt to authorize the payment on that future date. If there are not enough funds to cover the payment by 1:00 pm ET on that date, then the bill payment will fail and we will send you a notification by email.

You must provide a valid email address when you enroll for online bill pay. Email is the only means by which we communicate payment failure notifications.

MoneyCard Vault and Prize Savings

The MoneyCard Vault feature with the Prize Savings program is not available on Walmart MoneyCard cards originally issued by GE Capital Retail Bank (Synchrony Bank).

What is the MoneyCard Vault?

The MoneyCard Vault is a FREE feature that allows you to set aside cash for a rainy day or a specific goal. Use it to stash cash for safe keeping, emergencies, or future purchases. Money in your Vault cannot be spent on purchases or cash withdrawals. You can move funds in and out of your Vault as often as you like. There are no additional fees to use the Vault, but money in your Vault does not earn interest. To use the Vault, you must agree to the MoneyCard Vault Service Agreement, the Electronic Communications Agreement and your email address must be verified.

How can I access my MoneyCard Vault?

You can access your Vault, view the amount of money you’ve set aside, or transfer money in and out of your Vault by logging in to walmartmoneycard.com or our mobile app. Don’t have the mobile app? Get it here.

Is the Online Vault I currently use changing?

No. If you currently use the Online Vault, the way you transfer money in and out of your Vault is not changing. The Online Vault is now the MoneyCard Vault and includes the Prize Savings program. You will be entered for chances to win just by stashing cash in your Vault.

Are there fees related to the MoneyCard Vault or Prize Savings program?

While there are no fees associated with using the MoneyCard Vault or to participate in the Prize Savings program, winners of drawing prizes are responsible for all taxes, and any costs and expenses associated with prize acceptance. Green Dot Corporation will issue an IRS Form 1099-MISC for each Grand Prize winner. All federal, state and local taxes imposed on the acceptance of a prize are solely the responsibility of each winner.

Is there a limit to how much money I can set aside in my MoneyCard Vault?

Money that is set aside in your Vault is included in your total card balance limit. The amount in your Vault plus the amount of your available card balance cannot exceed your card balance limit. See your Cardholder Agreement for more information.

How can I spend the money in my MoneyCard Vault?

Money in your Vault cannot be spent on purchases or cash withdrawals. To access the money you have set aside, simply transfer it from your Vault back to your card by logging in to WalmartMoneyCard.com or using the Walmart MoneyCard app.

What is the Prize Savings program?

We want to help you put money aside for emergencies or future purchases. So we created Prize Savings, an incentive program that allows you to participate in a monthly drawing for cash prizes just for stashing funds in your MoneyCard Vault. By having as little as $1 in your Vault during an Entry Period, you’ll automatically gain entry into a monthly drawing to win one of 500 cash prizes! The more money you stash away, the more entries you’ll earn. You will earn one entry for each dollar in your Vault during the Entry Period (based on average daily vault balance), up to a maximum of 500 entries. A total of 500 cash prizes will be awarded every month during the program; 1 Grand Prize winner will receive $1,000 and 499 additional cash prize winners will receive $25. See official rules for entry periods, drawing schedules, and details.

How can I participate in Prize Savings?

Participating is easy! Stash as little as $1 in your MoneyCard Vault to earn an entry in the monthly entry period, up to a maximum of 500 entries per month. The more you save, the more chances you have to win.
To start using your Vault, you’ll need to enable the feature, verify your email address and agree to the MoneyCard Vault Service Agreement and the Electronic Communications Agreement. Log in to walmartmoneycard.com or the Walmart MoneyCard App to get started. To learn about how you can enter without having a Walmart MoneyCard, see the official rules.

What can I win?

Five hundred (500) prizes will be awarded each month of the promotion. 1 Grand Prize of $1,000 and 499 additional cash prizes of $25 will be awarded each month.

How are winners selected and how often are drawings held?

Winners are selected at random from among all eligible entries received during the Entry Period, and drawings are held once a month. Prizes are awarded on a monthly basis during the program duration. See official rules for a schedule of drawing dates.

How do I get my prize if I win?

If you win, you will be notified by the Administrator by email within three (3) business days from the date of the Random Drawing (on or about the 12th of each month) with further instructions on how to claim your prize. Grand Prize winners will be required to sign and return an Affidavit within three (3) calendar days from the date of attempted notification or the Grand Prize may be forfeited in its entirety and awarded to an alternate winner. Upon verification of eligibility and the completion of the Affidavit, your cash prize will be credited directly to your Walmart MoneyCard. If you entered via an alternative method of entry, your winnings will be emailed to you in the form of a Walmart e-gift card. To learn more about the alternative method of entry, see official rules.

How are entries calculated?

Entries are calculated based on your average daily balance in the MoneyCard Vault for the entry period. You will receive one (1) entry for the monthly drawing (“MoneyCard Vault Entry”) for every one dollar ($1.00), rounded up to the nearest dollar, of your average daily balance each Entry Period, up to a maximum of five hundred (500) entries. For example, if your average daily Vault balance is $143.25, we’ll round it up to 144 entries. An Entry Period begins the 1st of each month through 11:59 pm Pacific Time of the last day of each month.

How can I increase my entries in the monthly Prize Savings drawing?

Keep an average daily balance of $500 or more in your MoneyCard Vault to earn the maximum amount of entries (500 entries each month). The more you save, the more chances you have to win.

What are the odds of winning?

The odds of winning a prize depend on the total number of eligible entries received during each Entry Period, by all participants. You can increase your chances of winning by earning the maximum amount of entries each month. You can earn up to 500 entries every Entry Period.
